New Sanctions Against Russia and Call for Ceasefire
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has announced additional sanctions aimed at the Russian Federation while urging for an “immediate ceasefire” in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Even after more than three years of fighting, discussions between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have seemingly stalled as of Wednesday.
Bessent remarked, “In light of President Putin’s unwillingness to end this senseless conflict, the Treasury Department is imposing sanctions on Russia’s two largest oil companies, which are fueling the Kremlin’s military operations.”
The Treasury Secretary shared this message through a statement on social media, emphasizing, “Now is the time to stop the killing and seek a ceasefire. Our sanctions target the significant resources behind Putin’s war efforts.”
He elaborated that the Treasury Department is prepared to take further action to assist President Trump in halting ongoing conflicts, encouraging allies to join in adhering to these sanctions.
Earlier that day, Bessent had mentioned, according to Fox Business Channel, that these sanctions were in direct response to perceived dishonesty from Putin in the negotiations.
“President Putin hasn’t approached the negotiations as transparently as we had hoped,” Bessent stated during an interview with Larry Kudlow. He noted, “There were also discussions in Alaska. President Trump recognized that there was no progress and decided to walk away. While there were behind-the-scenes talks, I think there’s disappointment regarding the current negotiation state.”
He concluded, “We will be announcing a substantial increase in sanctions against Russia. I can’t provide exact details yet, but this will be among the most significant sanctions levied against Russia.”
On a related note, the president denied a report from The Wall Street Journal that suggested the US had agreed to lift restrictions on Ukraine’s use of long-range missiles in the conflict with Russia.
Trump stated, “The Wall Street Journal piece claiming the US authorized Ukraine to utilize long-range missiles deep into Russia is completely false! The US has no involvement regarding the origin of those missiles or Ukraine’s actions!”
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte mentioned that Russia’s economy is struggling under increasing pressure for President Putin to engage in meaningful negotiations for peace.
In a significant humanitarian effort, First Lady Melania Trump has used her platform to advocate for the return of Ukrainian children believed to have been taken by Russia from the battlefield. Ukrainians have accused Russia of abducting these children and attempting to brainwash them to favor Russian interests.
Military analysts suggest that Russia may have lost between 165,000 and 235,000 troops since the invasion began in February 2022. Conversely, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy reported approximately 43,000 Ukrainian military casualties, though this number may be on the lower side, according to recent updates from various sources.
