U.S. Needs Aggressive Tariffs on China-Made Cars

Democrats seeking re-election in battleground states have sided with former President Donald Trump, saying the United States should protect American auto workers by imposing tariffs on cheap electric vehicles (EVs) from Chinese companies. I am proposing that.

President Trump made headlines in March when he warned that China’s attempts to flood the U.S. market with cheap electric vehicles would be a “disaster” for the U.S. auto industry.

President Xi, if you’re listening, I’ll say to China, you and I are friends, but President Xi understands how I’m dealing with the construction of this giant monster car that you’re building in Mexico right now. Factory, and you’re thinking: Are you going to get it and not hire an American and sell the car to us, no?

We are going to impose a 100 percent tariff on every car that crosses this line. And if I win, I won’t be able to sell those cars. If I don’t get elected, it’s going to be a disaster for the whole thing, it’s going to be a disaster for the country at least. That would be the bare minimum. [Emphasis added]

While Democrats are trying to misinterpret President Trump’s “bloodshed” comments as implying political violence, several members of Congress seeking re-election in 2024 in battleground states have expressed concern about the former president’s economic nationalist policies. I admit that I agree.

“I’m going to work really, really, really hard to make sure that Chinese cars don’t get any benefit from the trade deals that we have,” said Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.). ” he said. Said politiko.

Similarly, Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Mich.) proposed: politiko She said she wants to impose steep tariffs on Chinese-made cars to protect American auto workers.

“In my opinion, the more aggressive we are, the better.” Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Mich.) told POLITICO: He added that he is looking to the Biden administration to decide where to set tariffs. “I’m not taking my cues from Donald Trump, who on the campaign trail showed that he had no idea what he was talking about, only to repeat the words from his mouthpiece on the podium. I keep making salads. [the] automotive industry. ” [Emphasis added]

said Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), who faces a tough re-election battle against Republican Bernie Moreno. politiko He also wants to raise tariffs on China, but did not provide details.

“Ohio knows all too well how China illegally subsidizes its companies, puts workers out of work, and undermines entire industries from steel to solar manufacturing.” Mr. Brown said. politiko. “We can’t wait to see China implement this same strategy in the auto industry. Strong regulations, including but not limited to tariffs, are needed to stop the flood of Chinese-made electric vehicles that threaten Ohio’s auto jobs.” is required.”

Mr. Brown, along with Senators Gary Peters (D-Mich.) and Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) lobbying activities President Joe Biden’s Commerce Department plans to significantly increase tariffs on China

Allowing heavily subsidized Chinese cars to enter the U.S. market would jeopardize U.S. auto manufacturing. Domestic automakers also note that they are investing billions of dollars in the transition to building EVs in the United States using American workers. A flood of artificially low-priced Chinese-made EVs in the United States would cost thousands of American jobs and jeopardize the survival of the entire American auto industry. To strengthen American manufacturing and protect the nation’s EV transition, [U.S. Trade Represenative] We must act immediately to maintain or increase China’s Section 301 tariffs on EVs. [Emphasis added]

Republicans in the House and Senate have steadily aligned with voters, with nearly 70% of voters now saying free trade costs U.S. jobs.

February, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Missouri) introduced A bill that would raise the tariff rate on Chinese-made cars (including cars made by Chinese automakers but not necessarily manufactured in mainland China) to 100 percent.

Also, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) introduced A similar bill would impose a $20,000 tariff on Chinese-made cars and amend federal law so that cars made by Chinese automakers but not made in mainland China would still be considered Chinese-made.

Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.), who is running for Indiana’s vacant U.S. Senate seat, is calling on the Biden administration’s Commerce Department to launch an investigation into China’s current tariff evasion and reduce U.S. auto jobs. We requested that additional tariffs be seriously considered in order to save the country.

“China’s dominance of the global EV supply chain creates complex national security risks that need to be remedied by U.S. tariffs on global EV imports,” Banks said. write.
