U.S. Open 2024: American Taylor Fritz pulls stunning upset to reach semifinal

The 2024 US Open men's singles bracket has been full of surprises since the tournament began, and the upsets continued in the quarterfinals, when Taylor Fritz defeated fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev 7-6, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 to reach the semifinals, a tough match in which the 12th-seeded American came from behind to win the traditional third set and then triumph in a fourth-set tiebreak.

This is the first time in Fritz's career that he has reached a Grand Slam semifinal.

Fritz won the tiebreak 6-2 to take the first set after both players held serve. Zverev fought back without much drama in the second set and seemed to be in control until Fritz broke serve early in the third. Fritz withstood a break from Zverev and won the final two service games to take the set. Both players held serve in the fourth set, but Fritz held serve in the tiebreak 7-3.

Fritz hit the first serve and consistently won points, and although Zverev served faster throughout the match, Fritz fought back and won enough points to win the match.

There were several long rallies throughout the match, with both players demonstrating a high level of play.

Could we see two Americans meet in the semifinals? Fritz will face the winner of the match between 20th seed Francis Tiafoe and 9th seed Grigor Dimitrov. If Tiafoe wins, it will ensure that an American reaches the U.S. Open men's final. No American has won the tournament, or any Grand Slam tournament, since Andy Roddick in 2003.

In the men's quarterfinals, No. 1 seed Jannik Sinner will face No. 5 Daniil Medvedev, and No. 25 Jack Draper will face No. 10 Alex de Minaur in Wednesday's quarterfinals.

Fritz was excited after the game.

With two title contenders already out of the 2024 U.S. Open, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, Fritz is beginning to believe he is on a destined path.
