Increasing Threats Against Government Officials

The U.S. Secret Service is currently navigating one of the most precarious threat environments in its history. Director Sean Curran has indicated that threats against government officials could rise by as much as 40% in 2026.

This uptick in concern aligns with a notable increase in threats directed at public figures and government leaders.

During a press briefing at Secret Service headquarters on Wednesday, Curran shared insights into the troubling current landscape, noting that the threat levels have reached unprecedented heights during his time with the agency.

“Generally speaking, we are currently in a high-level threat environment; it’s no secret. Events occurring globally impact our operations. This is how we shape our security strategies,” Curran remarked to reporters.

“Let’s remember that we also protected the former president. This isn’t about political affiliation; it’s about fulfilling our duty to protect those at risk,” he continued.

Despite these challenges, the agency has faced several assassination attempts against President Donald Trump since the election campaign in 2024. The latest incident was at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in April, where a gunman attempted to breach security with the intent of harming the president.

“If the president visits the same location numerous times, the circumstances shift. The environment and physical conditions change, requiring us to send the advance team repeatedly,” Curran explained.

“You need to clearly define where the lines are. Unfortunately, we anticipate issues with the magnetometer. But that’s why it’s in place—it worked in that instance. You can’t simply halt everything in a community during an event,” he added.

The Secret Service is responsible for the safety of the president, vice president, former presidents, their families, and also investigates threats against high-ranking government officials.
