United States Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that a U.S. service member lost their life during a controlled detonation of a downed Iranian drone in northern Iraq. Additionally, another service member sustained injuries but is receiving treatment for what has been described as a minor injury.
“A U.S. service member in northern Iraq was killed in action July 18 during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone,” CENTCOM noted.
In keeping with their standard procedure, CENTCOM is withholding further details to respect the families affected during the notification process.
In the same statement, CENTCOM also shared updates regarding two other service members who died and another who is currently missing in Jordan following an Iranian attack on July 17. They mentioned that U.S. military personnel discovered unidentified remains and that the examination process to confirm the identity of the remains is ongoing.
According to various media reports, the conflict with Iran has resulted in the deaths of over a dozen U.S. troops, alongside hundreds sustaining injuries.
CENTCOM indicated that more than 50,000 U.S. troops are currently deployed across the Middle East.
