Strengthening National Security Through Solar Energy
Daniel Barceló, CEO of T1 Energy, spoke at a policy event in Washington, D.C., emphasizing that American-made solar energy enhances U.S. national security. He pointed out that T1 Energy is dedicated to producing solar energy for Americans, highlighting its potential as a highly “scalable” and “reliable” energy source.
Barceló shared that they recently acquired a facility to produce 5 gigawatts of solar modules in Dallas, which he sees as a significant step. He made a compelling argument for solar energy’s importance, particularly to skeptical Republicans in attendance.
He noted that China boasts considerable solar power generation capabilities, with the manufacturing capacity to produce components in just 18 months if needed for the U.S. power grid.
“The evidence shows that solar energy storage is a legitimate power source,” he stated, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach to energy.
He added, “The revenue from solar power is less than the marginal costs of alternatives. Essentially, we have limited options: natural gas, nuclear, and solar. The U.S. is blessed with excellent solar resources, so it would be a missed opportunity not to leverage that.”
Matthew Boyle, Washington bureau chief for Breitbart News, pointed out the national security implications of increasing power production and invited Barceló to expand on this idea.
Barceló responded by framing the discussion around energy security, stating its critical importance. He highlighted America’s need for scalable, reliable, and low-cost energy sources for economic health. While he praised nuclear power, he acknowledged that regulations can delay natural gas projects and noted that other technologies, like hydropower, aren’t currently expanding.
“When we examine our current resources, it brings us back to solar power’s scalability, utilizing technologies that are widely adapted and commercially available,” Barceló concluded.
