US Visa Revocation Sparks Controversy in Mexico
Former Mexican President Andres Manuel López Obrador’s son, Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, has found himself at the center of a political storm after the U.S. revoked his visa. This decision has not only caught the attention of the former president but has also prompted a flurry of reactions among Mexico’s political elite. It seems that the U.S. State Department has stirred up some significant discontent over this matter.
López Beltrán took to social media to announce the visa revocation, posting a letter he addressed to President Donald Trump. In this letter, he called for an investigation into what happened, suggesting that Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Undersecretary Christopher Landau were behaving like “Hitler’s thugs.” This has clearly added a dramatic flavor to the situation.
On the political front in Mexico, reactions have been quite varied. Members from rival parties are celebrating the news, while those from the ruling Morena party view it as a direct attack from the U.S., insinuating that it’s a meddling effort aimed at destabilizing Mexico’s political landscape.
Meanwhile, Landau didn’t shy away from the situation either. He posted a cheeky tweet mentioning that everyone should grab more popcorn because there’s more drama on the way. It seems he’s leaning into the sarcasm commonly found among diplomats on social media.
Interestingly, he previously adopted the moniker “Quitavizas,” translating to “visa removers,” after the State Department began pulling visas of individuals expressing anti-American sentiments online. Just days before López Beltrán’s announcement, the State Department had revoked visas linked to the Cartel Jalisco New Generation (CJNG), which raises questions about a potential connection between the two events. Though it’s not certain, CJNG is notorious for its involvement in the illegal fuel trade.
Despite the allegations, López Beltrán has not faced any criminal charges in Mexico. The situation around him is complicated; his ties to underground fuel dealings have come to light, suggesting there may be connections involving various government officials. This entanglement with the illegal fuel market might even be influencing the Morena party’s financing for campaigns.
