U.S. State Dept. Revokes Visas of Mexican Band that Glorifies Drug Cartel Kingpin ‘El Mencho’

Mexican band Los Alegress del Baranco is a group that praises the drug cartel for many of its songs, and has cancelled its visas by the Trump administration ahead of a planned concert in San Francisco.

The band was scheduled to headline the South Bay concert on April 29th, but U.S. Deputy Secretary Christopher Landau stepped in on April 1st to put the band’s plans on the brakes.

“I am a firm believer in freedom of expression, but that doesn’t mean that expression should be free from the outcome,” Landau wrote in X’s post.

“Mexican band Los Alegress del Baranco painted an image at a recent concert in Mexico celebrating the drug kingpin Elmencho, the head of the grotesquely violent CJNG cartel.

“In the Trump administration, we take our responsibility for foreigners’ access to our country seriously. The last thing we need is a welcome mat for those who praise criminals and terrorists,” Landau concluded.

Los Alegres Del Barranco is a niche band that is often referred to as the “narcocoride” genre, or drug ballads.
