Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Tuesday the U.S. plans to announce $3.2 billion worth of additional military spending.
It is unclear how much of the package will be delegated under the president’s withdrawal authority to withdraw arms, ammunition and equipment from the U.S. military stockpile to meet Ukraine’s so-called “short-term” needs.
Austin also spoke about the Biden administration’s plans to continue working toward Ukraine’s membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
“Ahead of next week’s NATO summit, Rustem, we intend to take steps to build a bridge to Ukraine’s membership in NATO,” Austin said. “Just a few weeks ago, President Zelenskyy and President Biden signed an important 10-year bilateral security agreement that reflects our strong and enduring support for Ukraine. So I look forward to further discussions about how to meet Ukraine’s immediate security needs, as well as how to build a future military to deter further Russian aggression.”
Since 2022, the United States has provided Ukraine with more than $50 billion in military aid.
