UAE Looks into Flight FZ1073 as a Possible Terrorist Incident

UAE Investigates Incident on Flydubai Flight FZ1073

On Thursday, Dr. Hamad Saif al-Shamsi, the UAE’s attorney general, announced that public prosecutors would look into a potential organized terrorist attack related to the previously averted crisis on Flydubai Flight FZ1073, which occurred on Wednesday morning.

Al-Shamsi mentioned that since the flight took off from Dubai and the airline is registered in the UAE, the country has legal jurisdiction over the matter. He explained that Emirati law is applicable to any criminal activities on an aircraft, regardless of where they happen.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later shared that UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed al-Nahyan has permitted Israel to participate in questioning the apprehended assailant, whose identity remains undisclosed.

The UAE authorities indicated that their investigation would explore whether there was any intention of terrorist activities or organized plans leading up to the incident.

Flight FZ1073, which was headed to Tel Aviv and largely carrying Israeli passengers, experienced turmoil when the co-pilot attacked the captain with a knife, prompting an attempt to crash the aircraft.

The captain, identified as Indian national Smit Machchhar, remarkably managed to reopen the cockpit door despite suffering serious injuries. An Israeli passenger, Yaniv Hayun, was instrumental in subduing the attacker, thus averting a potential disaster. Both Netanyahu and President Donald Trump praised Machchhar and Hayun for their courageous actions in saving the flight.

The plane was diverted to Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, for an emergency landing. The UAE Foreign Ministry expressed gratitude towards the Saudi authorities for their support in handling the situation.

Initial findings from Saudi officials showed that the pilot had been assaulted by the co-pilot and both sustained injuries. Flydubai Airlines characterized the event as an “altercation” and advised against premature conclusions regarding the motivations behind the attack.

The assailant, described only as an “Omani national,” was arrested in Saudi Arabia and subsequently transported back to the UAE after receiving medical clearance.

Captain Machchhar was also moved to Abu Dhabi for further treatment and is reportedly recovering. Netanyahu revealed that Machchhar had suffered a stab wound to the head and significant arm injuries. Following a hospital visit, India’s ambassador to the UAE, Dr. Deepak Mittal, reported that Machchhar was in good spirits, displaying joy and comfort, which was reassuring for his loved ones.

Netanyahu remarked that it seemed very probable the co-pilot intended to bring the plane down had he not been stopped. He added that the assailant had shown signs of Islamist radicalization and had even pleaded with passengers and crew to end his life, indicating suicidal tendencies.

Although the prime minister inferred that the flight details could suggest the potential involvement of accomplices or Iran, he refrained from drawing definitive conclusions at this stage.

Interestingly, Netanyahu noted that the co-pilot somehow circumvented Israeli protocols, which prohibit pilots from nations lacking diplomatic relations with Israel from participating in inbound flights. He acknowledged a significant loophole had been exploited and assured that efforts were underway to address this issue.

Reports from the Times of Israel highlighted allegations that Israeli security agencies have been lax in reinforcing the ban on pilots from non-diplomatic countries and had allowed numerous Omani pilots to operate flights to Israel over the years. An anonymous airline executive suggested that the security services had the capability to quickly identify pilots on the Dubai airline but chose to overlook this information.

Another Israeli news outlet mentioned that a colleague of the co-pilot had described him as a “religious extremist,” noting he engaged in excessive prayer and refused to shake hands with women.

President Donald Trump conveyed that if any connection to Iran is established concerning the attack on Flight FZ1073, there would be severe repercussions.

The U.S. State Department confirmed that among the passengers onboard the flight were four American citizens and stated their readiness to assist them through local authorities.
