Authorities are looking into the deaths of two individuals found within a day of each other at the University of California, Berkeley. One victim was a student who reportedly fell from a dormitory, while the other was discovered near a bustling campus area.
The second incident took place around noon on Wednesday when a man’s body was found in some bushes close to Sproul Hall, which is adjacent to the busy Sproul Plaza. Campus police mentioned that the man doesn’t seem to be associated with the university, and details regarding his identity have not been released.
Earlier, on Tuesday night, emergency responders were called to Unit 3, a residence hall complex, where a 21-year-old student fell and was subsequently pronounced dead.
The Alameda County Coroner later confirmed the identity of the student as William Yi Lu, a third-year student majoring in theater and performance studies.
According to campus police, they do not suspect foul play in either of the cases, and it seems there’s no indication that the two incidents are linked.
The cause of both deaths will be determined by the Alameda County Coroner.
While the university and its police department did not provide immediate comments regarding the incidents, officials maintained that there is no known threat to the campus community, although they acknowledged that these recent events have unsettled many.
University spokesperson Adam Ratliff expressed sadness over the situation, stating that the news is truly tragic. Additionally, the university has made counseling services available to those in need of support.
The investigation is ongoing.
