UCLA Receives Significant Donation from Alumnus

UCLA boasts yet another remarkable donation, this time from alumnus Angelo M. Mazzone III, who has contributed a staggering $10 million to support the football program, particularly in crucial areas of need.

This donation adds to Mazzone’s ongoing generosity; he has previously had the Rose Bowl named after him and has contributed to the Wasserman Football Center, which now features an outdoor terrace.

UCLA President Julio Frenk remarked, “Angelo’s extraordinary dedication reflects the deep connection that many Bruins feel to this university and the role athletics plays in our community.” He added that such generosity ensures student-athletes receive essential support both on and off the field.

Mazzone’s ties to UCLA are strong—having earned both his undergraduate and law degrees there—and he has been a source of support for almost five decades. Earlier this year, he pledged $1 million to the Then Now and Forever Fund for UCLA Athletics.

The funds will bolster resources for the head coaching position, enhance the infrastructure required for high-level competition, and strengthen essential areas that contribute to player success, including academics and health.

Bob Chesney, the head football coach, expressed his gratitude, stating, “It is extremely humbling to receive such a gift from such a dedicated, influential and valued member of the Bruin family.” He emphasized that Mazzone’s commitment demonstrates trust in the program, and the team will strive to meet that trust every day.

Originating from Chicago, Mazzone joined UCLA in 1968, becoming the head football coach after a stint coaching in high school. He later worked as assistant athletic director while attending law school. Known for his dedication, he has not missed a home football game and has only missed a handful of away games over nearly 60 years.

“UCLA has been responsible for every great thing that has happened in my life,” Mazzone shared. “So much of what I’ve accomplished has been coming back there. I’m grateful for the relationships I’ve enjoyed with so many special people as part of the UCLA football family.”
