Switzerland Coach Sees Vulnerabilities in Argentina Ahead of World Cup Clash
Murat Yakin, the coach of Switzerland, thinks Argentina might show some weaknesses as they gear up for a challenging quarter-final match this Saturday against the current world champions.
This matchup is being regarded as Switzerland’s toughest test in the tournament so far. “Facing the reigning champions is incredible. It’s a huge opportunity for us. However, looking at Argentina’s last couple of games, it’s clear they have their vulnerabilities,” Yakin mentioned during a press conference on Tuesday.
Until the round of 16, Argentina seemed shaky. They barely made it through with close 3-2 victories against both Cape Verde and Egypt. Meanwhile, Switzerland also had its own close call, securing a solid 2-0 win over Algeria before needing penalties to defeat Colombia.
“I think we’ve gained our opponents’ respect. Tactically, it’ll make for an interesting game. We really could surprise the world champions,” Yakin continued. “For a nation like Switzerland to be facing Argentina in the quarter-finals is monumental, so expectations are high.” He paused for a moment and added, “I think we still need a few hours—maybe even a day—to truly grasp what’s happening to us.”
In their round of 16 match, Argentina had a goal overturned by VAR, which inadvertently helped them out, as a foul was claimed by an Egyptian player during the play.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that Switzerland is preparing for unfavorable outcomes in their approach, conducting scrimmages with varying team sizes, like 11-on-10 or even 11-on-8. Additionally, Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Korbel is reportedly training for up to two hours daily on penalty shootouts.
