The win was huge for Perez, who was hoping to move into contention for the UFC bantamweight championship. The title is held by Raquel Pennington, who entered this match ranked 15th.
It was Perez's celebration that had fans turning their heads in the immediate aftermath. She rose from her hold on Zheleznyakova and began twisting her face.
In response to journalist Ariel Helwani's reaction to the move, Perez said: “Daria said something very rude to me before the match, so I had to do it.”
