British Defense Secretary’s Comments on Putin Spark Outrage
British Defense Secretary John Healey has stirred controversy by expressing a desire to capture Russian President Vladimir Putin and put him on trial for war crimes.
Following recent displays of military strength during the Trump administration’s efforts against Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro, Healey is now hoping for a similar outcome regarding Putin, who leads a nuclear-capable Russia.
While visiting Ukraine, Healey remarked that if the UK had the capability to kidnap world leaders, it would “detain and hold Putin” accountable for war crimes. He cited mass graves in Bucha, uncovered shortly after Russia gained control of the city during its 2022 invasion, and a report of hundreds of Ukrainian children being taken to Russia as examples of war crimes attributed to the Russian leader.
He stated, “This situation illustrates everything about President Putin’s resolve to wage war not just on Ukraine, but also to target civilians, infrastructure, and cities—particularly during the harsh winter months.”
Healey emphasized the urgent need to stop Putin, asserting, “This war has to end. Our mission is to support Ukraine in its fight and to back peace efforts moving forward.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy also hinted at the idea of dealing with dictators, mentioning that if the U.S. could handle Maduro, it would likely know how to address future challenges.
Healey’s comments arrived shortly after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer agreed to a “declaration of intent,” which includes sending British troops alongside French forces into Ukraine if a peace agreement is established between Kiev and Moscow.
However, there are concerns regarding the UK’s military readiness, as its forces have dwindled to their lowest numbers since the early 1800s.
Despite the improbability of the UK executing a Maduro-like operation against Putin, the Kremlin responded with indignation to Healey’s statements.
Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, labeled Healey’s comments as “the wet fantasies of British perverts.”
Over the course of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the Russian government has frequently depicted Britain as a shadowy manipulator behind so-called “Anglo-Saxon” efforts to undermine Russia, resonating with historical portrayals of Britain as a “treasonous Albion.”
Dmitry Medvedev, a close ally of Putin, has been particularly vocal, referring to Britain as Russia’s “eternal enemy” and previously threatening nuclear repercussions for the country.
