UK government introduces mandatory digital ID for employment: 'Safer, fairer and more secure'

UK Government Mandates Digital ID for Employment

On Friday, Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that a digital ID will become essential for anyone looking for work in the UK.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy aimed at tackling illegal immigration. The government believes that illegal employment is a significant factor attracting migrants to undertake perilous journeys across the UK Channel.

“Without a digital ID, you cannot work in the UK,” Starmer stated, emphasizing the importance of this measure.

He added that the ID would not only hinder illegal job activities but also offer “countless benefits” to citizens. Senior Minister Darren Jones mentioned that this digital ID would form “the bedrock of a modern nation.”

During his presentation at the Global Progressive Action Conference in London, Starmer asserted that maintaining fair immigration practices is crucial to preserving the integrity of political agreements.

“This government is announcing that new digital IDs will be required for the right to work by the end of this parliamentary session,” he explained. “It’s just as easy,” he continued, suggesting that most people want to address the issues they see, but that real solutions require tackling the roots of these problems.

The Prime Minister described the move as a way for the government to “control the border,” saying, “We need to know who is in our country.” He criticized the exploitation of foreign workers, framing it as an issue that undermines fair wages.

Hartlepool Congressman Jonathan Brash, from the Priority Party, stated that it was vital to dispel the myths surrounding digital IDs. “This would make our country safer and fairer,” he commented, sharing a political poster that echoed this message.

In related sentiments, journalist Lewis Blackpool remarked that this is “a fight for freedom,” arguing that responsibility is central to liberalism. He encouraged citizens to stand up for their rights while advocating for peaceful resistance against the government’s plans.

Finally, news from earlier in September indicates that both French President Emmanuel Macron and former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair have been pushing for the introduction of mandatory digital IDs.

Reports suggest that Blair has been attempting to promote the use of IDs since the early 2000s.
