UK police detain multiple Iranian individuals over suspected plan to carry out an attack in London.

British counterterrorism officials have detained an Iranian man in connection with an alleged plot to attack a specific private location in London, as announced by the Metropolitan Police on Sunday.

On Saturday, five men, aged between 29 and 46, were arrested across different areas of the UK for suspected terrorist activities. Four of the individuals are Iranian nationals, while the nationality of the fifth is still being determined.

Additionally, three other Iranian men, aged 39, 44, and 55, were taken into custody in London due to national security concerns.

All suspects have been interrogated at a police facility, but no charges have been filed yet. Investigators are currently conducting searches in London, Manchester, and Swindon.

Authorities indicated that the plot targeted a particular location, although details have not been disclosed for operational reasons. Commander Dominique Murphy, who oversees the police counterterrorism unit, mentioned that the motivation behind the attack is still under investigation.

Interior Secretary Yvette Cooper characterized the arrest as a “serious event” that highlights the need for ongoing adjustments in national security responses. She affirmed that the government remains committed to collaborating with police and intelligence agencies to evaluate necessary security measures to safeguard the nation.

Previously, in October, Ken McCallum, head of MI5, revealed that there have been 20 “potentially fatal” plots backed by Iran since 2022, claiming that British Iranians are targeting fellow countrymen opposing the Iranian regime.

McCallum also noted that escalating conflicts in the Middle East could heighten the threat of Iranian state activities within the UK. Currently, the official UK terrorist threat level is categorized as “substantial,” indicating a noticeable risk of an attack.
