UK Re-Arrests RAF Fairford Subjects, Claims They Are Foreign Intelligence Operatives

In an ongoing investigation into the incident at Royal Air Force Fairford, two men have been re-arrested.

British Counterterrorism Policing took the 24-year-old and 25-year-old into custody again on Tuesday, suspecting them of aiding a foreign intelligence agency. These individuals hail from Westminster in London; the younger is a British citizen, while the older holds dual British and Iranian nationality, according to reports.

They are alleged to have supplied intelligence to Iran.

According to a statement from the British Counterterrorism Policing Office of Media Inquiry, “Since the events at RAF Fairford on Sunday 27 September, our specialist teams have been working tirelessly to interrogate the many lines of enquiry involved in this hugely complex investigation. So far, seven men have been arrested in connection with our investigation.” The statement continued, “As a result of the ongoing efforts of our officers, earlier today, two of those men were re-arrested for offences relating to Section 3 of the National Security Act — assisting a foreign intelligence service.”

The younger man was initially taken into custody on September 27 near the RAF Fairford site, and the older one was arrested on October 1 in Westminster. They were both released on bail shortly thereafter. Additionally, five other British males in their mid-20s were arrested and also released on bail without further questioning.

Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, who oversees Counterterrorism Policing, mentioned, “This is very much a live investigation, and our evidence gathering continues. However, we consider it highly likely that there is Iranian state involvement. Our investigators are examining the extent and intentions behind that involvement.”

Initially, the two men were arrested due to their connection to explosives discovered near the RAF Fairford base. This incident subsequently led President Donald Trump to withdraw bombers from the base, as reported.
