Ukraine and Russia convened in Turkey on Friday for their first meeting since 2022. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appears more focused on theater than on pursuing peace.
This marked the first face-to-face discussions between Russia and Ukraine in over three years, postponed by a day from its originally scheduled outdoor start on Thursday. The talks reportedly lasted over two years but ended without any significant outcomes.
A spokesperson from Ukraine commented on the discussions, stating, “Russian demands do not align with reality and far exceed what was previously discussed. They even include an ultimatum for Ukraine to withdraw from its territories under conditions of ceasefires that are quite non-constructive.”
On the other hand, Russian media accused Ukrainian representatives of “pushing towards war rather than peace.” They claimed that Ukraine was engaging in “staged provocations” and “theatrical performances.”
The discussions were chaired by Turkey’s foreign minister, viewed as a “technical” negotiation aimed at setting the stage for higher-level talks. The Ukrainian team was led by Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, while Russian organizations were headed by Kremlin advisor Vladimir Medinsky.
Zelensky was present in Türkiye yesterday but has since attended a summit in Albania. Anticipating the talks’ outcome, he labeled the Russian delegation as a “theatrical” farce, arguing that if any agreement was reached without direct authorization from Putin, any failure would lie with Russia and thus merit international repercussions.
Russia asserted that the Moscow delegation was disingenuous, claiming they maintained contact with President Putin and his local administration.
Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine would not engage in peace negotiations without a ceasefire. He reiterated, “Our priority is a complete, unconditional, and sincere ceasefire. This needs to happen quickly to halt further violence and lay a solid groundwork for diplomacy.”
If Russia resists agreeing to a ceasefire, Zelensky suggests it shows that “Putin is not interested in ending the war.” He called on global supporters of Ukraine to pressure Moscow to engage with integrity.
The two delegations did not exchange handshakes or direct communication before taking their seats. According to CNN, the Ukrainian representatives spoke solely through interpreters when addressing the Russians, a possibly symbolic gesture given the prevalence of the Russian language in Ukraine. Meanwhile, Russian state media insisted that all discussions were conducted exclusively in Russian.
This story is still developing.
