Ukraine Appreciates Trump's Support for Nuclear Submarines

Ukrainian Government Reacts to Trump’s Submarine Redeployment

The Ukrainian government has responded to President Donald Trump’s decision to redeploy two nuclear-powered submarines in the region as a countermeasure against Russia.

Andriy Yermak, a close ally of President Volodymyr Zelensky, expressed appreciation for Trump’s move on Monday, stating, “The concept of ‘peace through strength’ works… Russia only understands power.” It seems there’s some recognition of the need for a firm stance.

This conversation was sparked on Friday when Trump mentioned the submarines following a provocative statement from former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev. Medvedev, who has re-emerged on social media as a prominent voice after stepping back from the National Security Council, had a somewhat alarming tone in his comments—suggesting the U.S. would be at risk. He claimed that “Russia is right in everything and will continue to go its own path” in response to Trump’s remarks about American films featuring zombies.

Interestingly, since this exchange and Trump’s show of strength, Medvedev’s usual social media activity has significantly decreased. It was even notable that he didn’t appear in Russian state media for a few days up until Monday morning. The Kremlin attempted to downplay his significance, suggesting that only statements from President Vladimir Putin should be taken seriously.

Yermak noted, albeit with some frustration, that Trump’s submarine announcement seemed to have rattled one Russian individual who had previously threatened nuclear action.

Trump reiterated that a threat had indeed come from Medvedev and emphasized the protection of Ukrainian citizens, stating that the redeployment of the submarines has been finalized and “they are in the area.”

Last month, President Trump set a deadline for negotiations with Russia regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, later narrowing it down further to an August 8th deadline. He mentioned that the U.S. would engage in last-minute discussions with Russia to encourage a more positive response. Special envoy Steve Witkov is expected to travel to Moscow midweek.

If an agreement isn’t achieved, Russia might face significant tariffs, a strategy introduced by Trump. This isn’t merely about imposing sanctions, but about affecting Russia’s international trade channels, especially since China and India are vital markets for Russian energy exports.

Trump urged Russia to “stop the killing” and “strike a deal” to avoid economic penalties, particularly concerning its relationship with China.
