Ukraine intensifies efforts against Russia with underwater attack on the Crimean bridge

Explosion Hits Bridge Linking Russia and Crimea

A significant underwater explosion targeting the bridge between Russia and Crimea left the structure in a state of “emergency,” as reported by the Ukrainian Security Services (SBU) on Tuesday.

This startling blast occurred shortly after Ukraine launched its “Spider’s Web Operation,” which involves synchronized drone strikes deep within Russian territory. These strikes aim at key military assets, possibly including Russia’s air force resources.

General Vasily Malyuk emphasized that the Crimean Bridge is a legitimate target, describing how it serves as a crucial supply route for Russian military operations. He stated, “The illegal installations of the Russian Federation should not exist on our territory. Crimea is Ukraine, and any representation of occupation will provoke a serious response from us.”

The SBU noted that approximately 2,500 pounds of underwater explosives detonated near the Karch Bridge. Footage captured the explosion affecting one of the bridge’s pillars, with onlookers assessing the damage afterward.

Malyuk, who oversaw the operation, mentioned that it demanded months of meticulous planning. He declared the bridge to be in a precarious situation post-explosion.

According to the Associated Press, delays on the Kerch Bridge reached about three hours that morning, and though the bridge was temporarily closed, it managed to reopen before being shut down again. Thankfully, civilians were not reported injured following the incident.

Reflecting on past actions, Malyuk noted that Ukraine had already targeted the Crimean Bridge in previous years, indicating the continuation of an ongoing campaign.
