Overnight Attacks in Ukraine: Civilians Affected
KYIV, Ukraine – Civilians faced fatalities and injuries during the night as Russia and Ukraine exchanged drone strikes.
Local officials in Russia’s Tatarstan reported that two people were killed. Meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities mentioned Russian drone assaults targeting Odesa’s Black Sea port and a fire near a Poland border crossing.
In recent weeks, Russia has intensified its aerial assault, employing ballistic missiles and jet drones to breach Ukraine’s defenses. This escalation seems aimed at taking advantage of Ukraine’s diminishing missile interceptor supplies. These attacks also focus on Ukraine’s power infrastructure, presumably to undermine civilian morale as winter approaches.
On Sunday, reports stated that two individuals lost their lives and another 12 sustained injuries after Ukrainian drones struck Nizhnekamsk in Tatarstan. The regional head, Rustam Minnikhanov, noted that the fatalities occurred when a drone crashed into a tree near the victims’ parked car.
Nizhnekamsk is pivotal for Russia’s oil sector, hosting a significant number of oil refineries and various chemical plants. Mayor Radmir Belyaev mentioned that a fire erupted at one of the city’s facilities but did not provide further details.
Ukraine has aimed its recent long-range strikes at Russia’s oil and gas sectors, asserting that these resources finance the ongoing war. This campaign has led to fuel rationing in Russia, even though it’s a major oil and gas exporter. Additionally, Ukrainian strikes have targeted key Russian online retailers, further dragging the war into the public consciousness.
On the same day, Ukraine reported achieving a hit on a significant oil refinery in Slavyansk-on-Kuban, located in Russia’s Krasnodar region, adjacent to Crimea. The Ukrainian Defense Intelligence agency stated that its drones targeted an essential oil processing unit and a tank farm at the refinery, igniting a large fire visible from great distances.
According to Krasnodar officials, this strike on the Slavyansk facility injured three individuals, damaged an oil pipeline, and caused a fire. They did not directly comment on Ukraine’s assertions.
Russia’s defense ministry reported that their forces shot down a total of 389 Ukrainian drones that night, including in Tatarstan and other occupied regions.
Odesa, home to Ukraine’s primary port on the Black Sea, suffered a “massive” nighttime attack from Russia, resulting in at least nine injuries, according to Serhii Lysak, the city’s military head. Odesa has endured relentless strikes over recent months, with Moscow accused of attempting to disrupt export routes.
A Russian drone attack on Saturday hit a high-rise residential building in Odesa, leading to two civilian deaths and injuring 26 others. The upper floors were reportedly devastated, as indicated by regional head Oleh Kiper.
Western Ukraine also experienced significant Russian bombardment overnight, though there were no immediate reports of casualties. One drone attack caused a fire at a petrol station near the Yahodyn-Dorohusk border crossing with Poland, as reported by Ukraine’s chief diplomat and a local customs spokesperson.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha posted a message on X, suggesting that “Putin’s terror” is knocking at the doors of the EU and NATO, warning that “Russian barbarians are at your gate, dear partners.”
The Yahodyn border crossing has become vital for military and humanitarian aid flowing into Ukraine from Western allies. Valentyna Chernysh from the Volyn Customs Office noted that the Yahodyn crossing remained intact and undamaged since no one was injured during the air raid alert, which temporarily closed the crossing and directed people to safety.
In another incident, Ukraine’s state rail operator reported a Russian drone assault on a passenger train’s locomotive in the Volyn region, just a short distance from the Polish border.
Ukraine’s air force claimed to have shot down or suppressed 409 Russian drones of various types during the night, including a newer, faster jet-powered variant. Overall, Russia launched 453 drones at Ukraine in this round of attacks.
