UN Security Council adopts US resolution backing Israeli cease-fire offer

The UN Security Council on Monday called on Hamas to accept an Israeli ceasefire offer after passing a US resolution to step up pressure on the terror group.

The Security Council voted to adopt the resolution with 14 votes in favor and 0 against. Russia abstained.

The resolution calls for a temporary ceasefire in Gaza to allow the release of around 120 hostages being held by Hamas in exchange for Palestinian prisoners being held in Israeli prisons.

After the Jewish state expressed its concerns about the UN resolution last week, US officials agreed to update it to address Israeli concerns, including dropping their opposition to Israel’s establishment of a security buffer zone in the Gaza Strip. The Times of Israel reported.
