Trial for SNAP Fraud Amid Upcoming Benefit Suspension
As more than 40 million Americans brace for the suspension of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, a trial has begun for a member of a conspiracy related to SNAP fraud.
On October 15, an illegal immigrant from Italy residing in Oregon admitted to his involvement. He had previously been sentenced to federal prison after pleading guilty to a conspiracy charge aimed at defrauding the United States.
“By siphoning off millions of dollars in government funds intended for food-insecure households, this illegal criminal alien has proven to be one of the worst of the worst,” a Justice Department spokesperson remarked.
Over a fourteen-month window from August 2023 to October 2024, 29-year-old Giovanni Spirea and his accomplices utilized electronic skimming devices to unlawfully acquire more than 120,000 pounds of groceries while stealing SNAP benefits.
According to the Justice Department, “Spirea shared the stolen account information with gang members, who, along with him, bought large quantities of infant formula, energy drinks, and nonperishable food items eligible for SNAP. These products were then sold on the black market.”
In total, the group operated across Oregon, Washington, and California, resulting in an estimated theft of $2.4 million in goods.
“Safeguarding government programs like SNAP is not just about maintaining funding. It’s about preserving the trust that families place in these essential supports,” stated Scott Bradford, U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon. “This sentencing should discourage future attempts to defraud American families and the government for personal gain.”
Spirea received a two-year prison sentence, followed by three years of supervised release, and has been ordered to repay $61,874.32 in restitution. Additionally, sixteen others were also charged with conspiracy.
