Man Hides in Tree for Eight Hours to Evade ICE Arrest
Federal officials reported that a man, Raul Ikal, attempted to escape arrest by hiding in a tree for eight hours. This incident occurred when Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and state troopers sought Ikal due to a warrant linked to his illegal entry into the U.S. following a traffic stop on April 29.
A local resident in San Antonio was quite surprised to witness Ikal scrambling around, including using a ladder to climb onto the roof of a nearby house before making his way up into the trees. It seemed like a pretty desperate attempt.
After quite some time, an officer managed to talk Ikal down from his perch, leading to his arrest. Originally from Guatemala, he had initially been deported in 2013 but had returned unlawfully to the United States.
One woman, who chose to remain anonymous, shared her experience with the local news. She had been running errands nearby and was initially baffled by the excitement surrounding the situation.
“I was just here, observing all the commotion, and I kept thinking about when he was planning to come down,” she remarked.
Another local business worker named Mike Howell acknowledged Ikal’s cleverness in trying to evade capture. He described how the agents seemed to overlook Ikal initially until they finally looked up and spotted him.
Howell noted after the incident, “It was quite an interesting day, to say the least. I imagine sitting up there for hours couldn’t have been comfortable for him. He must have been in real pain after a while.”
Video footage captured the arrest, and it’s definitely something that caught the community off guard.
