Belichick’s First College Game as North Carolina Coach Ends in Loss

Jordon Hudson, North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick’s boyfriend, was spotted talking to him before the game against UCF, but it didn’t translate into success for the team on Saturday. The Tar Heels faced a tough defeat, losing 34-9 on the road, which puts their record at 2-2 as Belichick navigates his first season in college football.

Before kickoff, Hudson was seen chatting with Belichick, adding a personal touch to what is sure to be a challenging career for the 73-year-old coach. Exactly what they discussed isn’t clear, though there was a moment when Hudson appeared to whisper something as they prepared for the game.

“First of all, they did a great job at UCF today,” Belichick commented post-game, praising the opposing coach, Scott Frost. “Their team certainly played better than us. We had so many issues—it’s just been inconsistent.” The Tar Heels started poorly, allowing 13 unanswered points early on. While they managed to get some field goals in the second quarter, the damage had already been done, and UCF continued to build on their lead.

Interestingly, TCU players took the opportunity to tease Belichick, suggesting he needed to call his girlfriend after the loss, likely hinting at the off-field drama surrounding his relationship with Hudson.

Belichick’s quarterback, Gio Lopez, struggled, throwing for just 87 yards and two interceptions before getting injured in the third quarter. This loss marked Belichick’s first defeat since his coaching debut against a different rival. The team had previously secured a 20-3 win over Charlotte and a decisive 41-6 victory against Richmond.

Hudson had been a regular presence on the sidelines leading up to the match, even drawing attention before the TCU game with a social media mention that went viral after that tough defeat.

Reflecting on the press coverage surrounding him, Belichick was not keen to delve into details about his relationship with Hudson during a controversial interview on CBS Sunday Morning, stating, “We’re not talking about it.” An email revealed that there were ongoing discussions regarding the impact of his romantic relationship on his professional life, adding to the intrigue around his coaching tenure.

North Carolina’s general football manager, Michael Lombardi, defended Belichick, saying that the media attention surrounding his relationship with Hudson is simply “noise.” He dismissed any claims that it could distract the team, calling it “comical” and irrelevant.

As Belichick’s coaching journey continues, it’s clear that both on and off the field, there will be plenty to navigate in the coming games.
