UNC has made concessions to support Bill Belichick, according to Mack Brown.

Former coaches at North Carolina are questioning the effectiveness of the new coach. Mac Brown, who previously worked with the team, suggested that the university created opportunities for success for Bill Belichick by enhancing the NIL package and easing academic standards for his inaugural season.

Brown, a former National Champion, expressed pride in Belichick, hoping he leads the team to a strong performance. He stated on SiriusXM radio, “Bill Belichick is definitely the best coach of all time. They allocated funds and made academic adjustments. Honestly, I think they should have struggled, but they’ve managed to sign new players in their 60s.”

NC fired Brown in November after a tenure that spanned three years, looking to refresh the team after a period marked by average performance.

Over his last six seasons, Brown compiled a record of 44-33, marking his second period with the team, including a 6-6 season.

North Carolina subsequently hired Belichick in a high-profile move, offering him a five-year, $10 million contract loaded with perks.

The team’s offers included significant enhancements to the NIL package, reported to be between $4 million and $20 million.

Brown’s time at the helm began prior to the NIL era, but he noted that North Carolina did not react to the new regulations like other major conferences after their introduction.

“It was time for me,” he reflected. “We were a bit late to the game because we lacked the financial support in North Carolina. We struggled to attract top talent as we had initially. It felt like a mutual decision—like a divorce. Everyone was ready for a change.”

Belichick and North Carolina are set to kick off their season at home against TCU on September 1, with road games against Clemson and Syracuse scheduled for October 4 and Halloween, respectively.
