North Carolina Triumphs Over Duke in Thrilling Match
Perhaps the second attempt really is the charm.
During a heated rivalry game on Saturday, North Carolina fans rushed the court after the No. 14 Tar Heels pulled off a nail-biting 71-68 victory against the No. 4 Duke. But, well, there was a bit of a hiccup—the game wasn’t quite over yet.
With the score tied at 68, UNC guard Seth Trimble made a last-second 3-pointer from the corner, which sent the packed Dean E. Smith Center into a frenzy as fans surged onto the court.
But hold on—after a review, officials determined that there were still 0.4 seconds remaining on the clock. That’s definitely enough time for Duke to have a shot at tying it.
Officials then had the complex task of clearing the court of enthusiastic fans for the final play. Surprisingly, it went pretty well, with the arena’s PA system guiding fans back to their seats in an orderly fashion.
Duke couldn’t capitalize on that last chance, sealing the win for North Carolina. This time, when the celebration erupted anew, no whistle blew to stop the fans.
This was the Tar Heels’ second loss to Duke this season, yet they improved to 19-4 overall and 7-3 in the ACC. Both teams seemed ready for the spotlight, with UNC’s star freshman Caleb Wilson facing off against Duke’s Cameron Boozer for the first time. Both are anticipated as top picks in the upcoming 2026 NBA Draft.
Wilson led his team with an impressive 23 points, shooting 8-of-12, along with four rebounds. After the game, he reflected, “We’ve got to give them that belt,” addressing Duke in a chat with ESPN.
As for Boozer, despite the loss, he put on a strong performance, racking up 24 points from 10-of-21 shooting and also collecting 11 rebounds.
