Illegal Immigrant Charged in Fatal Florida Crash
Reports indicate that a group of undocumented immigrants, connected to the deaths of three individuals in a Florida highway accident, had previously evaded deportation by alleging fears of returning to India. The suspect, identified as Harjinder Singh, 28, reportedly obtained a driver’s license in California despite lacking legal status in the U.S.
Singh was arrested on Tuesday after he allegedly made an illegal U-turn on the Florida Turnpike near Fort Pierce while operating a tractor trailer.
Local authorities described the incident as involving a semi-truck colliding with a passenger vehicle. Authorities noted that, as investigations continue, commercial truck drivers seem to exploit unsafe opportunities to make U-turns, disregarding the safety of others.
According to available reports, the crash resulted in the deaths of a 54-year-old man from Miami, a 37-year-old woman from Pompano Beach, and a 30-year-old man from Florida City. Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while another driver later succumbed to injuries at a local hospital.
Footage from the tractor trailer suggests the moment Singh executed the illegal U-turn.
Singh has been charged with three counts of vehicular homicide. Florida’s Attorney General stated that Singh’s actions displayed a reckless disregard for human life, assuring that he would not evade justice.
During the investigation, it was confirmed that Singh entered the U.S. illegally in 2018 through Mexico and later received a commercial driver’s license in California. Statements from the Department of Homeland Security highlighted that Singh should face deportation following the conclusion of his criminal proceedings.
Florida officials voiced concerns about policies enabling individuals without legal rights to drive commercially. A recent law in California allows residents, regardless of immigration status, to acquire driver’s licenses, stirring debates on its implications.
In light of the tragic incident, Florida’s leadership criticized California’s approach to undocumented immigrants obtaining licenses, emphasizing safety concerns for residents. Governor Ron DeSantis pointed out the potential dangers of California’s sanctuary policies.
Statements from various officials expressed outrage regarding the impact of sanctuary state policies, stressing the necessity to prevent individuals like Singh from operating vehicles on public roads.
