An undocumented immigrant from India, who entered the U.S. via the southern border during the Biden administration, has admitted guilt in a tragic highway accident in Southern California that resulted in three fatalities.
Jashanpreet Singh, aged 21, pleaded guilty to three counts of gross negligence manslaughter related to an eight-vehicle collision on the westbound Ontario Freeway in October 2025, as confirmed by the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office.
According to prosecutors, Singh was under the influence of drugs while driving a semi-truck. Traffic had slowed ahead of him, but he failed to stop, crashing into several vehicles, which included three semi-trucks, two pickup trucks, and two cars, leading to a devastating chain reaction.
The California Highway Patrol reported that three individuals lost their lives, and four others sustained injuries, including Singh and a mechanic who was assisting him on the highway shoulder.
During a court hearing last month, Singh switched his plea from not guilty to guilty. He is set to be sentenced on July 14 in Rancho Cucamonga and is currently held in Adelanto without bail.
The Department of Homeland Security noted that Singh first entered the U.S. in 2022 through the southern border and was released under the Biden administration’s policies.
Following his arrest in October, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement pursued charges against an immigration officer for driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
Interestingly, the California Department of Transportation has validated that Singh possesses a California commercial driver’s license. Witnesses recounted hearing an explosion as Singh’s red semi-truck sped towards the vehicles in front of him.
“It just came straight in, without any maneuvering,” Jason Carmelat told NBC.
The traffic had slowed down moments before the crash, but Singh’s truck continued forward, causing a lethal chain reaction, according to CHP officials.
One witness described the aftermath, saying that the truck rolled over, crashed into the embankment, and caught fire.
CHP Officer Rodrigo Jimenez characterized the scene as a significant emergency, with car parts strewn everywhere. “There was hazardous material involved, making it a large-scale incident,” he mentioned. He also commented that the tragedy might have been averted had someone acted calmly.
In the time since, the Trump administration has introduced a stringent “zero release” policy aimed at detaining or deporting illegal immigrants immediately after their arrest, rather than allowing them to remain in the U.S. during their immigration proceedings.
