Trucking Industry Faces Scrutiny After Fatal Accident Involving Illegal Driver

The spotlight is back on America’s trucking industry as a recent accident has raised alarm bells once again. An illegal immigrant truck driver has been charged in connection with a deadly crash that claimed two lives.

Rajinder Kumar, a 32-year-old from India, was charged after allegedly jackknifing a semi-truck on Route 20 in Bend, Oregon, on November 24. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has filed a detention complaint against him.

In this tragic incident, Kumar’s truck struck a Subaru Outback, resulting in the deaths of the vehicle’s driver, William Micah Carter, and his passenger, newlywed Jennifer Lynn Lower.

Kumar now faces charges of criminally negligent homicide and reckless endangerment and is being held at the Deschutes County Jail.

Lucky enough to have crossed the U.S.-Mexico border near Lukeville, Arizona, illegally in November 2022, Kumar was, rather surprisingly, granted work authorization by the Biden administration in 2023 and issued a commercial driver’s license by California.

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Oregon is a sanctuary state, which adds another layer of complexity to this case. They indicated that ICE would take necessary measures to detain Kumar should he be released.

Tricia McLaughlin, the DHS Assistant Secretary, voiced her concern, questioning how many more tragedies like this one it would take before politicians in sanctuary states reconsider allowing illegal immigrants to operate large, dangerous trucks on U.S. roads. She expressed condolences to the victims’ families, while reiterating ICE’s commitment to removing illegal alien truck drivers from the highways.

Kumar’s court hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.

This incident follows a troubling pattern, as multiple fatal crashes involving illegal truck drivers have been reported recently. For instance, Jashanpreet Singh, a 21-year-old Indian national, is accused of causing a crash in California that killed three people in October. Similarly, in Indiana, 41-year-old Borko Stanković, an illegal immigrant from Serbia, was involved in a crash that killed one person. There’s also Harijinder Singh, another illegal Indian immigrant, arrested in Florida for a truck accident that claimed three lives.
