Update on Recent U.S. Military Incidents in Jordan

UPDATE: 2:04 PM: The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that unidentified remains have been discovered in Jordan at the site where an Iranian attack resulted in the deaths of two U.S. service members and one missing on July 17.

“Yesterday, CENTCOM confirmed the deaths and the missing status of one service member following the Iranian attack,” the command stated in a release. “After conducting a thorough search, personnel found unidentified remains at the location today. An examination process to confirm these remains is currently in progress,” it added.

CENTCOM noted that it will hold back further details out of respect for the families of the deceased during this notification phase.

In retaliation for the Iranian strikes, CENTCOM announced it executed additional airstrikes aimed at the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Saturday to diminish Iranian influence in the Strait of Hormuz.

8:52 AM: Over the weekend, U.S. Central Command noted it had completed another set of targeted strikes, marking the eighth consecutive night of operations against Iranian military targets after the loss of the two service members.

These recent strikes focused on IRGC forces, aiming to reduce their capabilities that threaten maritime safety in the region.

“These strikes are aimed at further degrading Iran’s capacity to endanger commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and swiftly punishing those responsible for the attacks on our service members in Jordan,” the command said in a statement.

Reports indicated that the service members were engaged with Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks at the time of the incident. Several other service members sustained injuries, with four needing hospitalization but later released. The count of the missing service member remains as is.

The strikes commenced at 6:00 p.m. ET and wrapped up at 11:30 p.m., successfully hitting critical military installations associated with Iran. CENTCOM specified that the strikes were a response to the Friday attack.

“American military assets focused on IRGC forces tied to the recent assaults on our service members,” the command indicated. “More than 50,000 U.S. troops are actively stationed throughout the Middle East, remaining alert and ready.”

President Donald Trump, who ordered the airstrikes, expressed his sorrow over the loss of troops in various media interviews, asserting a commitment to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear capabilities.

“It’s a very sad thing. We hate to see it happen. It’s in service to our country…we’re determined to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon,” he stated during a phone interview.

In light of these events, there has been an outpouring of sympathy from legislators across the political spectrum for the families affected by the tragedy.

“I’m praying for the loved ones of these brave fallen American heroes, for the swift recovery of those injured, and for the safe return of the missing service member. May God bless our brave men and women in uniform,” remarked Speaker of the House Mike Johnson.

“I’m heartbroken to hear about the deaths of two U.S. service members in Jordan. My thoughts are with their families as well as those injured and missing,” stated Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

However, some members of Congress have criticized the ongoing conflict with Iran.

“Trump started a misguided war without a strategy to conclude it. Now, our service members are paying the price,” said U.S. Senator Ruben Gallego.

Conversely, other lawmakers called for active retribution.

“My prayers are with our troops lost and missing in action. May God comfort their families. President Trump is justified in retaliating against their attackers. Further strikes will safeguard Americans and diminish Iran’s hold on the Strait,” remarked U.S. Senator Tom Cotton.

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth commented on the situation, stating that the sacrifices made by the troops reinforce their resolve.

According to various reports, 16 U.S. service members have lost their lives since the onset of the conflict with Iran.
