United Airlines Cancels Controversial 9/11 Memorial Flyover
United Airlines has decided to abandon its plan for a “9/11 memorial tribute” that involved a Boeing 777 flying low over Denver, accompanied by F-16 fighter jets. The initiative faced widespread backlash, with some critics labeling it as potentially “the worst memorial idea anyone has ever planned.”
The flyover was scheduled for 9:03 a.m., precisely when terrorists used United Airlines Flight 175 to hit the South Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. The display aimed to evoke memories of that tragic day, particularly the scenes of fighter jets scrambling to enforce U.S. airspace after the hijackings.
It’s worth noting that two of the hijacked aircraft were United Airlines flights, including Flight 93, which, following a courageous effort from passengers, was brought down in a Pennsylvania field rather than reaching its intended target.
The Denver Office of Emergency Management made the announcement about the flyover on Tuesday, stating it was meant to “honor and remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001.” The message, posted on X, included details about the aircraft’s flight path and the involvement of F-16s from Buckley Space Force Base.
They made it clear that there was “no emergency” but cautioned that the flyover might be “highly visible” and more attention-grabbing than what residents might experience with regular air traffic.
The public’s reaction on social media was immediate and overwhelmingly negative. Users questioned the reasoning behind such a tribute. One person shared, “Who thought this was a good idea?”
Another remarked, “This has to be one of the most tone-deaf stunts ever,” while a number of others described the plan as “horribly poor taste” and “totally unnecessary and wasteful.”
Just a day after the announcement, the Denver Office of Emergency Management confirmed the cancellation of the flyover. They noted, “United has canceled its planned 9/11 memorial aircraft flyover in Denver following concerns raised by members of the community.”
The office also assured the public that no aircraft flyover would occur during the memorial events, thanking those who voiced concerns. United Airlines has yet to respond to requests for comments on the matter.
