United Airlines Introduces TSA Wait Time Tracker on Mobile App
Travelers feeling stressed about airport security can find some relief with a new feature from United Airlines. Starting today, United has introduced a tracker in its mobile app to give passengers a heads-up on estimated wait times at TSA security and pre-screening lanes.
United Airlines aims to “reduce uncertainty and give customers more control over their airport experience,” as stated in their press release.
This feature is available at United’s main hub airports, such as Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, New York/Newark, San Francisco, and Washington D.C.
Passengers will receive real-time updates on wait times, which can help them plan their trips more effectively. This release comes at a time when airline travelers are experiencing the longest security checks in TSA’s history, with reported wait times spanning over four and a half hours for some individuals.
Fortunately, the situation has improved recently, as congestion eased this week and TSA employees began to receive back pay following the government shutdown.
At least at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport, lines that previously lasted for hours were reduced to under ten minutes on Monday.
Airports like Atlanta and Baltimore-Washington International are also seeing smoother boarding processes.
Jason Birnbaum, United’s chief information officer, highlighted the importance of timely information: “While we appreciate the work and professionalism of our TSA employees, the Department of Homeland Security shutdown continues, and travelers are continuously looking for updates on security wait times.” He added that the app caters to customer travel needs and aims to help them better plan their journeys.
It’s important to note that these estimated wait times are derived from available data and may not accurately reflect the actual wait experienced by passengers.
Besides the wait time tracker, the United app now includes features for turn-by-turn navigation to gates, live flight status updates, and real-time alerts on the possibility of holding aircraft for passengers with tight connections.
Additional app enhancements include a baggage tracking feature utilizing Apple’s AirTag technology, automatic assistance for rebooking, and potential meal and hotel vouchers for eligible travelers facing delays or cancellations.
Interestingly, United is now the only U.S. airline offering real-time radar map updates via text, which informs customers of how weather disruptions in one area might impact their travel elsewhere.
In a broader context, United Airlines’ CEO Scott Kirby recently mentioned that ticket prices could rise by as much as 20% if oil prices continue to climb due to geopolitical tensions in Iran.
Last month, the company also made headlines with a new cabin design that streamlines seating in standard coach while adding more options in premium sections. The fleet upgrade introduces the Coastliner aircraft for transcontinental flights and an Airbus A321neo with added premium economy and regular economy seating, albeit at the cost of some standard seats to accommodate a new snack bar.
Experts suggest that these shifts toward luxury might lead to higher fares for those traveling in economy class.
