Under a bill passed by the state Senate on Tuesday, the University of Wisconsin-Madison would have to admit all high school students in the top 5 percent of their class, and other campuses would have to admit students in the top 10 percent. This is part of the agreement reached between the council and the university.

The agreement signed in December also limits diversity positions at the system’s 20 campuses in exchange for raises for staff and funds to cover construction projects. A legislative committee gave final approval to the raises in December, and a series of bills enacting other parts of the deal are now moving through Congress.
The university said in a statement that the admission guarantee “helps encourage Wisconsin’s best students to remain in the state for post-secondary education and means more students remain in Wisconsin after graduation.” He said he supports the idea.
