University of Idaho band steps in to support Yale basketball for NCAA tournament

The University of Idaho marching band cheered on Yale in the first round, and has been praised for its sportsmanship. NCAA Tournament Friday night when the Ivy League team’s band learned it couldn’t make the trip out west.

Spencer Martin, the university’s band director, told KXLY that he received a phone call over the weekend and was informed that: bulldogs band He was unable to travel from Connecticut to Spokane, Washington, where the first and second rounds of the tournament would be held.

“I got a call from the athletics department around Sunday saying, ‘Yale’s band is not available. Would you like the University of Idaho’s Vandal Band to join?'” Martin told the magazine. “And it worked out to the point where we could play.”

The group quickly began learning the school’s music and even wore Bulldog costumes for games.

For head coach James Jones, he was grateful to have the support.

“I saw them outside and they had sheet music so they knew the music in terms of what to play. It was great,” he said after the game.
