University of Virginia president steps down due to pressure on diversity initiatives from the Trump administration

James Ryan, the president of the University of Virginia, announced his resignation on Friday in light of an investigation by the Justice Department into the university’s diversity, equity, and inclusion policies.

In a heartfelt letter to the university community, Ryan expressed, “I am writing with a very heavy heart… I have submitted my resignation as president.” He went on to explain that he champions the values of the university but feels unable to fight the federal government without facing significant consequences.

The Justice Department has claimed that Ryan did not comply with an executive order issued by President Trump, which aimed to dismantle programs that were considered “discriminatory.” A letter from the Justice Department emphasized that time was running short, and the board of directors was under pressure to address this issue.

Previously, Ryan received a warning from the DOJ regarding non-compliance with Trump’s directive. Reports suggest that some board members consulted with DOJ officials to find a resolution and were advised that they needed to take immediate action.

In his resignation letter, Ryan reflected on the implications of challenging the Trump administration, calling it potentially reckless, especially regarding the risk of losing federal funding and support for international students. He noted that while he believed strongly in certain principles, he could not justify putting the university community at risk.

“It was an honor to be your president,” he stated, revealing that he had initially planned to step down in 2026.

According to reports, Ryan indicated that his resignation would officially take effect by August 15th. The Trump administration has targeted several universities for similar reasons, asserting that they have failed to address anti-Semitism and have not dismantled DEI programs as requested.
