Senate Democrats Reject GOP Military Pay Bill Amid Ongoing Shutdown

Senate Democrats recently blocked a bill from the Republicans aimed at guaranteeing pay for active-duty military personnel and key federal employees impacted by the ongoing government shutdown.

The proposed legislation, known as the 2025 Shutdown Fairness Act and introduced by Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), fell short with a vote of 54-45, lacking the necessary 60 votes for passage largely due to Democratic opposition.

Interestingly, only three Democratic senators—John Fetterman (D-Pa.), Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.), and Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.)—joined Republicans in supporting the bill.

This act would have ensured compensation for essential federal workers and military members deemed “excepted” or involved in emergency operations during the shutdown. It also aimed to establish a permanent funding system for these employees in future shutdown scenarios.

“I just hope, on a nonpartisan basis, we do something that makes sense around here for once,” stated Johnson just before the vote.

He criticized the Democrats for their stance, claiming that the shutdown, referred to by him as the “Schumer Shutdown,” should not penalize federal workers. “The 2025 Shutdown Fairness Act is a permanent fix,” he insisted.

In contrast, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) condemned the bill as a mere “ruse.” He argued that it would give former President Donald Trump excessive power over federal payroll decisions during the ongoing shutdown.

“It’s nothing more than another tool for Trump to hurt federal workers and American families,” Schumer declared.

“We will not give Donald Trump a license to play politics with people’s livelihoods,” he added, reinforcing the Democratic opposition to the bill.

Speaker Mike Johnson has criticized the Democrats for their refusal to support the measure, suggesting that they are intentionally causing hardship for American citizens.

“UNBELIEVABLE. After Senate Democrats claimed they wanted a bill that would pay essential workers… Republicans gave them a chance to vote on a bill that would do that — and they BLOCKED IT,” Johnson expressed in a post on social media.

He noted a positive development: the two Georgia Democrats who sided with Republicans on the vote, which he interpreted as recognition of the untenable nature of the Democrats’ position during this shutdown.

The failure to advance the bill comes as the shutdown stretches into its fourth week. Recent attempts to pass a temporary funding measure on Wednesday resulted in yet another setback, marking the twelfth failed vote as both parties remain firmly entrenched in their respective viewpoints.

The Democrats are linking the government reopening to healthcare policies they favor, while Republicans are insisting that any discussions on healthcare need to wait until after the government is fully operational.
