University of Pennsylvania Supports Climate Advocate Michael Mann
The University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) continues to stand by its prominent professor and climate activist, Michael Mann. Recently, Mann took to social media and faced backlash for his derogatory remarks targeting Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA. He referred to Kirk with inflammatory phrases and even implied connections to Trump’s circle.
After receiving criticism, Mann deleted his original post, explaining that he “overlooks” the hateful rhetoric he had initially shared. He claimed he only meant to support general criticism of Ezra Klein’s statement regarding Kirk’s political approach. Mann insisted that he did not endorse the inflammatory language directed at Kirk.
Earlier this year, Mann had encouraged citizens to form militias against President Trump, dismissing violence against Kirk as “white violence” and “uncontrollable.” His repost also wrongly asserted that Kirk was involved in the events of January 6th.
Senator Dave McCormick (R-PA) responded to Mann, urging the university to take swift and serious action against him. McCormick labeled Mann’s behavior as mean and dangerous, calling for immediate repercussions.
Mann subsequently criticized McCormick, noting that he felt misunderstood and regretted the senator’s inflammatory demands. He acknowledged that the social media climate had likely exacerbated the situation, emphasizing he was criticizing how Kirk was celebrated by some, not Kirk himself.
Despite Mann’s objections, many view Kirk as a figure of free speech, especially given past tragic events involving him during campus dialogues. In fact, there have been claims that Kirk was targeted in a political assassination, with the shooter expressing frustrations over Kirk’s viewpoints.
This entire ordeal has raised eyebrows, especially since Mann continues to propagate strong anti-Kirk sentiments even after his tragic death. Observers see this as indicative of a wider societal issue, illustrating a concerning trend in how political figures can dreadfully mark public discourse.
The University of Pennsylvania has yet to respond to inquiries about its support for Mann and whether his comments align with the institution’s values. Other media outlets have similarly reported a lack of communication from the university, suggesting that they might be backing Mann and his controversial opinions.
Mann, a well-known advocate in climate science, has a history of intense social media posts. He even endorsed a misleading headline in 2024 that called for a “Drone Strike” on Trump, mirroring the societal division affecting various political figures today.
Critics have pointed out that Mann is not just an isolated voice but part of broader Democratic networks. He has previously been invited to testify before Congress and has connections with prominent political figures.
