The United States won its 40th gold medal Sunday in the women’s basketball final, the final event of the Paris Olympics.
The U.S. women’s basketball team overcame a 10-point deficit in the third quarter to beat France, 67-66, giving the U.S. an eighth consecutive gold medal in the event and securing a tie for the most gold medals won at a Summer Olympic Games.

China also won 40 Olympic gold medals. China reached the 40th medal thanks to Li Wenwen’s gold medal in the women’s 81 kg weightlifting. The United States finished one medal behind China with Jennifer Valente winning the gold medal in the women’s omnium.
The U.S. has been neck and neck throughout the tournament. Last week, players Jack Alexie, Chris Juliano, Hunter Armstrong and Caleb Dressel helped the U.S. win its first team gold medal. The red, white and blue have racked up wins in several sports over the past two weeks, including women’s soccer and men’s golf.

Japan won 20 gold medals, while host nation France won 16.
The United States finished the tournament with 126 total medals, China with 91, and Great Britain in third place with 65 medals, including 14 gold medals.

Both the United States and China won more gold medals than they will receive at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, with the United States winning 39 and China winning 38, compared to Japan’s 27.
