US Dollar Index remains steady around 98.50 before the Fed's policy decision
  • The US dollar index remains largely unchanged as traders exercise caution ahead of Federal Reserve decisions.
  • Market expectations suggest that the Fed will maintain current interest rates in their upcoming June meeting.
  • In May, US retail sales dropped by 0.9%, which was worse than the anticipated 0.7% decrease.

The US Dollar Index (DXY), which assesses the dollar’s value against six key currencies, is hovering around 98.70, experiencing some gains during Asian trading hours on Wednesday. There’s a prevailing hope that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates steady in the June meeting. Currently, traders see nearly an 80% likelihood of a rate cut in September, followed by another potential reduction in October, according to Reuters.

Market participants are likely to pay close attention to the Federal Open Market Committee’s (FOMC) commentary on monetary policy, seeking guidance in the face of ongoing tariff uncertainties and escalating geopolitical issues.

Challenges for the dollar are arising due to weaker-than-expected economic data released Tuesday. Retail sales fell by 0.9% in May, worse than the predicted 0.7% decline and a revision from a previous 0.1% drop in April. Additionally, industrial production witnessed a 0.2% decrease, contrasting with an earlier forecast of a 0.1% increase.

The dollar might rebound as a safe haven due to increasing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, where retaliatory actions between Israel and Iran continue. Tehran has, however, reportedly requested countries like Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia to persuade President Trump to call for an immediate ceasefire.

On Tuesday, President Trump urged on social media for Iran to “unconditionally surrender.” This has left investors anxious about potential US involvement in the Israeli-Iranian conflict.
