US foreign-born population shatters record amid border crisis

Amid the immigration crisis, the immigrant population has soared to an unprecedented 6.4 million under President Biden. This is a four-fold increase under former President Donald Trump. new research reveal.

Overall, there are a record-breaking 51 million people born in other countries living in the United States, a surge caused by millions of immigrants crossing the border, the Center for Immigration Studies report found.

“We’ve never seen anything like this before in three years. All previous records have been surpassed,” said Stephen Camarota, CIS principal investigator and author of the analysis.

Waves of migrants are flooding into urban areas, including New York City, straining the Big Apple’s shelter system and budget.

According to the report, more than half of streaming immigrants entered the country illegally without documents.

The report also said that in February 2024, the U.S. foreign-born population hit a new high of 51.4 million, now accounting for 15.5% and surpassing all previous records.

The proportion of the U.S. population that is foreign-born has more than tripled since 1970, nearly doubled since 1990, and increased by 40% since 2000 alone.

Growth in the foreign-born population is primarily driven by immigration from Latin America, which has increased by 4.2 million each since January 2021.

The average monthly increase in foreign-born people under President Biden is 172,000, four times the average monthly increase of 42,000 under former President Donald Trump before the coronavirus outbreak. This is double the average of 68,000 people under former President Barack Obama. He was the vice president.

If current trends continue, if Biden is re-elected, the foreign-born population will reach nearly 60 million people, or 17.5% of the U.S. population, by the end of his second term.

“We tentatively estimate that more than half (3.7 million) of the 6.4 million foreign-born population increase since January 2021 is likely to be due to illegal immigration. “The increase is even larger when we adjust for those who were missed,” the report said.

According to the report, most of the recent growth in the foreign-born population is due to illegal immigration, but legal immigrants still make up about three-quarters of the total foreign-born population.

“The scale of immigration appears to have made the Census Bureau’s population projections released last November outdated. The bureau predicted that the foreign-born share would not reach 15.5 percent until 2039. ” states the report.

Since February 2020, just before the coronavirus outbreak, the number of immigrant workers has increased by 3.3 million, while the number of U.S.-born workers has decreased by 1 million.
