US holds British commentator Sam Hamdi who praised Hamas' October 7 assault on Israel

Controversial Political Commentator Detained in the U.S.

A British political commentator, Sami Hamdi, known for his controversial views, has been detained in the United States shortly after beginning a speaking tour. His detention occurred at San Francisco International Airport as he arrived for an event organized by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

Hamdi has faced criticism for making statements that seemed to support the October 7 Hamas attack, which resulted in the deaths of around 1,200 Israelis. Following the attack, he reportedly encouraged attendees at a London mosque to “celebrate victory.” CAIR confirmed his detention, noting that the Department of Homeland Security has revoked his visa.

Assistant Secretary of the DHS, Tricia McLaughlin, remarked, “Under President Trump, those who support terrorism and undermine our national security will not be allowed entry into the U.S. That is just common sense.”

There have been widespread calls for Hamdi’s expulsion, especially considering his previous comments that appeared to condone the violence of the Hamas attack. Shortly after it happened, he allegedly told a gathering in London to rejoice over the events that transpired. “Don’t pity them. They don’t want your pity. Celebrate the victory,” he said.

Additionally, he has claimed that allegations of sexual violence by Hamas against Israelis are unfounded, according to reports.

Laura Loomer, a far-right influencer, took public responsibility for pushing for Hamdi’s arrest, referring to him as a national security threat. She tweeted that she urged federal authorities to address his documented support for terrorism—but CAIR countered this, claiming his detention was an infringement on free speech, arguing it was politically motivated due to his criticism of Israel’s actions. They stated, “This is an Israel First policy, not an America First policy. This must stop.”

Before his arrest, Hamdi participated in CAIR’s annual gala and was set to give another lecture in Florida that same day.

He is known as the founder and managing director of International Interest, a group that focuses on geopolitical risks and analysis. Hamdi has also been featured as a commentator on Middle Eastern affairs across various platforms in the UK.
