US Justice Department sending more prosecutors to Minnesota to hold fraudsters accountable – Bondi promises 'serious repercussions' for those found guilty

Justice Department Cracks Down on Fraud in Minnesota

Attorney General Pam Bondi announced on Tuesday that the Justice Department is dispatching prosecutors to Minnesota, a state dealing with rampant fraud issues, to tackle what she describes as a significant drain on taxpayer resources.

In a statement, Bondi emphasized the commitment of the Justice Department, saying, “We’re bolstering the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Minnesota to ensure those committing these widespread fraudulent acts face serious consequences.” She mentioned that there are plans to extend these efforts to other states grappling with similar schemes.

The Department of Justice is already engaged in several investigations concerning fraud in Minnesota. They have been actively involved in the notorious $250 million “Feeding the Future” scandal, where numerous fraudsters exploited funds intended to help children in need during the pandemic.

Additionally, the department is scrutinizing other programs such as Housing Stabilization Services (HSS), aimed at assisting vulnerable populations with housing through Medicaid, and the Early Intensive Developmental and Behavioral Intervention (EIDBI) program, which was designed to support children with autism.

So far, federal prosecutors have indicted 98 individuals connected to fraud cases in Minnesota, with a significant portion being of Somali descent, according to the Justice Department. Over the course of their investigations, the department has issued over 1,750 subpoenas, carried out more than 130 search warrants, and conducted upwards of 1,000 witness interviews, leading to 64 convictions.

The spotlight on fraud cases in Minnesota intensified last month when independent journalist Nick Shirley highlighted potential fraud at day care centers, suggesting that these might not be operating legitimately. The Justice Department confirmed that several facilities featured in Shirley’s viral coverage are currently under investigation, including a location connected to 13 defendants in the ongoing fraud probe.

Compounding these issues, the FBI is sending a significant number of forensic accountants and data analysis teams to Minnesota to explore possible connections between elected officials and terrorist financing, as stated by the Justice Department.
