US Marshal and undocumented immigrant shot during operation in Los Angeles, according to sources.

On Tuesday, a federal marshal and an undocumented immigrant were fatally shot during an immigration enforcement operation in Los Angeles. Federal agents had encircled those inside a vehicle when the driver allegedly attempted to escape by ramming a federal vehicle, according to statements from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).

The Department of Homeland Security reported that during a specific traffic stop, the undocumented individual, who had previously avoided capture, tried to elude arrest again. This led to federal agents firing shots, with one marshal reportedly being hit in the hand by what seemed to be a ricocheting bullet. The immigrant sustained an elbow injury as well.

Both individuals were hospitalized but are expected to recover. In the aftermath, protesters were seen at the hospital vocally challenging the staff while they treated the injured. The FBI has begun investigating the incident.

This shooting occurred amidst significant backlash from local elected officials regarding the Trump administration’s immigration policies. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has called for a congressional inquiry into the possible unlawful detention of U.S. citizens and immigrants by federal officials.

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin criticized sanctuary city officials, suggesting that recent rhetoric has encouraged illegal immigrants to resist arrest, which endangers everyone involved. She noted a dramatic increase in assaults on law enforcement by undocumented individuals, including incidents of vehicles being used as weapons.

In response to the raid, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors declared a state of emergency, stating that the federal operations have instilled fear and led to business closures. Mayor Bass mentioned that around 170 Americans had been detained nationwide.

Meanwhile, California Democratic Representative Robert Garcia has demanded that all documents related to the detentions be disclosed, especially after a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling allowed immigration raids to continue following a prior pause.

As the Department of Homeland Security asserted that this ruling supported public safety and the rule of law in California, McLaughlin urged prominent officials like Bass and Governor Gavin Newsom to conduct public seminars on resisting ICE actions.
