U.S. Reduces Personnel at 5th Fleet Base Amid Iran Tensions

The U.S. 5th Fleet headquarters in Bahrain has scaled back its personnel to a “mission-critical” level as fears grow over a potential U.S. attack on Iran, according to various U.S. officials. Currently, fewer than 100 staffers are on-site. This move mirrors a previous evacuation ahead of last June’s Operation Midnight Hammer, which targeted Iranian nuclear facilities.

Recently, the United States has bolstered its military presence in the Middle East while negotiations regarding Iran’s nuclear program remain ongoing. U.S. Central Command mentioned that the sailors and Marines aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, one of the deployed ships, are engaged in routine maintenance to ensure aircraft readiness.

In fact, CENTCOM noted that the crew’s skills enable the USS Abraham Lincoln to maintain ongoing air power, conducting over 100 sorties each day.

This past week, President Trump expressed concerns during the State of the Union, claiming Iran has “sinister ambitions” tied to its nuclear pursuits. He pointed out that the U.S. has yet to receive assurances from Tehran that it won’t seek nuclear weapons.

He recalled events following last summer’s strike on Iranian facilities, stating, “After Midnight Hammer, they were warned against any further attempts to rebuild their weapons programs, especially nuclear.” Nevertheless, he asserted that Iran seems to be restarting its ambitions despite prior warnings.

Trump emphasized the U.S. is engaged in negotiations with Iran, yet he hasn’t heard the critical assurance: “We will never have nuclear weapons.” He hopes for a diplomatic resolution but firmly stated that the U.S. will not permit Iran, labeled the world’s largest sponsor of terrorism, to acquire nuclear capabilities.
