US Navy helicopter with 6 on board crashes into bay in Southern California

A U.S. Navy helicopter crashed in Southern California on Thursday night, a military spokesperson said.

The MH-60R Seahawk crashed into the waters of San Diego Bay shortly after 6:30 p.m. while participating in a training exercise, the commander said. Beth Teach of the Naval Air Forces Pacific Fleet. All six crew members survived the crash.

“Due to the nature of the training, a safety boat was on scene,” the statement said. The surviving crew members were rescued from the water, brought to shore, and underwent medical examination.

The severity of the injuries was not immediately known. Navy officials said no one had serious or life-threatening injuries.

Fire department personnel and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the crash scene in Coronado, across the bay from San Diego.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

The aircraft belonged to Helicopter Maritime Attack Squadron 41, the Navy said.

The squadron is based at Naval Air Station North Island on the Coronado Peninsula and trains aircrews on the MH-60R Seahawk, according to its website.
