According to reports, the US military has seized an advanced weapons transport ship from Iran heading to Houthi-held territory in Yemen. US Central Command (CENTCOM) Thursday statement.
The US military has discovered more than 200 packages containing deadly weapons on a ship intended to support the Houthis, who have fired missiles in the Red Sea and disrupted international shipping in the region.
The U.S. Coast Guard seized unmanned underwater vehicle parts, explosives, networking equipment, anti-tank missile launcher assemblies, intermediate-range ballistic missile parts and other lethal equipment, according to a statement Thursday.
“This is yet another example of Iran’s malign activity in the region,” CENTCOM commander Gen. Michael Eric Kurilla said in a statement. “The continued supply of advanced conventional weapons to the Houthis is in direct violation of international law and continues to undermine the security of international transport and free commerce.”
Since November last year, the Houthis have launched missiles and launched drone attacks on commercial ships to protest Israeli military operations in Gaza and show solidarity with the Palestinians. The onslaught on transport vessels has prompted some companies to reroute ships to near the southern tip of Africa, making the route longer and more expensive.
Centcom Also announced on Thursday The US military announced that it shot down seven mobile anti-ship missiles, three unmanned aerial vehicles, and one unmanned aircraft in Houthi-held territory in Yemen. Centcom said the weapons were destroyed in four attacks protecting U.S. naval and commercial vessels in the area.
