National Guard troops shot and killed an immigrant Sunday while responding to a stabbing by an illegal border crosser in the El Paso area, as violence in the region continues to escalate.
U.S. soldiers sent to the region to contain the steady flow of illegal immigration into the U.S. from Mexico said in the afternoon that one migrant stabbed another on the banks of the Rio Grande near Razor Wire in Texas. He announced that he had received a report that he was there. In an internal memo from the U.S. Border Patrol.
One of the responding security officers ultimately shot and killed the migrant at the scene. The man who was shot then fled to Mexico.
The area where the incident occurred is near Gate 36, a hotspot for illegal crossings, where hundreds of migrants attacked National Guard troops on razor wire just weeks ago.
After Sunday’s incident, two migrants were reportedly treated for non-life-threatening injuries and headed to Border Patrol custody, after which the area was secured by Texas Department of Public Safety units.
After the riot at Gate 35 a few weeks ago, immigrants in the area became more brazen, National Guard officials told the Post.
Texas subsequently charged 214 immigrants with rioting and charged nine others with felonies for being the masterminds of the incident.
At least one migrant allegedly stepped on the knee of a responding soldier. US law enforcement also seized knives and shanks from members of the mob.
“These people were willing to attack the military,” a source told the Post at the time. “They have been willing to attack law enforcement. They have a complete disregard for our laws.”
Texas State Police were able to identify the group of rioters by reviewing the Post’s video of the altercation.
The state sent hundreds more troops to El Paso and installed more wire and fencing along the border to deter illegal border crossings after the massive rush.
