US targets Islamic State leader linked to ambush following third wave of strikes in Syria

U.S. Airstrike Kills Al Qaeda Leader in Syria

The United States has conducted a third airstrike in Syria, resulting in the death of an Al Qaeda leader with alleged connections to the Islamic State group. This individual was linked to the ambush that took the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter last month.

According to U.S. Central Command, Bilal Hassan al-Jassim was killed during an airstrike in northwestern Syria. They described him as “an experienced terrorist leader” involved in planning the attack on December 13 that led to the fatalities of Sergeant Al-Jassim, along with Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard and interpreter Ayad Mansour Sakat.

“The death of terrorists connected to the killing of three Americans underscores our commitment to pursuing those who target our troops,” stated CENTCOM commander Gen. Brad Cooper.

“No area is secure for those who plan or incite attacks against American citizens and forces. We will track you down,” he added.

This airstrike is part of a larger U.S. initiative, put in motion by President Trump after a U.S. ambush targeted members of ISIS who were attempting to regroup following the ousting of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad a year prior. It seems that the U.S. military is stepping up collaboration with local security forces as part of a coalition aimed at combating insurgent activities.

Previously, Syrian President Ahmad al-Shalah expressed his “extreme anger and concern” over the recent attack.

As part of this operation, named “Hawkeye Strike,” the U.S. and its allies, including Jordan and Syrian forces, have targeted over 100 Islamic State facilities and weapons depots.
